HOW YOUR SKIN CHANGES IN YOUR 40s
In our 40s, we start to see the loss of volume in the face, which can contribute to marionette lines, nasolabial folds and loss of cheek volume. Fine lines can start to appear around the lips, and we tend to lose lip volume. Crow’s feet, frown lines and forehead lines become deeper and more noticeable. Sun exposure, previous use of tanning salons and smoking can speed up the development of lines.

'Sad' Down-Turned Mouth Corners | Nasolabial Folds
Although down-turned corners of the mouth can be seen in certain younger individuals, the vast majority of these cases occur as people age.
As we age, our faces change in a three-dimensional way through changes in our bones, facial fat and skin layer. For example, a down-turned mouth is based on changes in our teeth and jaw. With age, our jaw starts to rotate backwards, and as it falls back into the deeper face, the skin around this area also falls backwards.
Another factor is the natural ageing process, which results in the natural loss of collagen and elastin – proteins that control how plump and firm skin is. As these deteriorate, skin can sag or look lax, which can lead to drooping mouth corners, especially around the mouth.
Solution
Lifting these corners with dermal filler is possible by adding volume and anchoring the corners higher up. When carried out with skills and care, this is an effective and safe treatment, and it helps restore a more refreshed appearance to this part of the face that is so important for nonverbal communication.

In our late 30s and 40s, loss of facial volume from the age-related deflation of the deep fat pads on the face is the main factor contributing to the hollowed, sagging, flattened and, hence, aged look of the face.
