Have you ever experienced a reddened facial complexion brought on by rosacea? This common, often chronic skin condition is triggered when an abundance of large blood vessels – called telangiectasia – redden and irritate the superficial layer of the skin, the epidermis. Common triggers include stress, warm weather, spicy foods, alcohol and skin products, and can stay with you all year round.
Rosacea flushing can be a challenge to control and leave you frustrated and self-conscious. This skin condition has been the subject of much research by dermatologists, and while there is no known cure yet, you can control the symptoms. Essence Medical Cosmetic Clinic is the first and only clinic in Scotland that offers the use of micro-Botox injections to treat this unsightly skin condition. Our skilled cosmetic doctor, Dr Kieren Bong is the only doctor globally to use an automated injection device for accurate administration of micro-Botox in the exact depth of the skin for maximum results.
Many patients have seen a significant reduction of redness for 4-6 months after just one treatment. We consider this an impressive time span and one that topical treatments for rosacea just cannot compete with.
Rosacea is a chronic skin condition that affects mainly the face. Most commonly, it affects the cheeks, nose, and forehead. Redness and swelling are the two most common symptoms, making for a rather unsightly appearance. While the cause is not fully understood, doctors believe that rosacea occurs when tiny blood vessels in the skin of the face dilate and become visible – known as telangiectasia; in severe cases, skin can thicken and swell, usually around the nose. These symptoms tend to go through periods of “flushing” before potentially developing into a persistent problem.
In some cases, rosacea is confused with types of acne as pimpling can sometimes occur, but the two conditions are entirely different and require a bespoke approach to treatment. Rosacea can leave sufferers feeling highly self-conscious, struggling to maintain all aspects of a healthy lifestyle and social schedule without feeling the negative mental impact
Does rosacea vary in intensity?
Mild rosacea results in light flushing and mild redness.
Moderate cases exhibit persistent redness and pimple like bumps. The skin can be overly sensitive and feel as if burned by the sun.
Severe rosacea may affect the nose causing the skin tissue to thicken and become bumpy. This is called rhynophyma.
Who gets rosacea?
Rosacea usually develops in adults between 30 and 50. It affects both men and women although it seems to affect more women while more severe cases occur in men. It tends to affect people with fair skin.
What causes rosacea?
It is believed that rosacea is the result of a combination of genetic and environmental factors. Chronic sun exposure is a known factor for rosacea.
What are the treatment options?
Rosacea is not a condition that will improve on its own. You may have tried prescription creams containing anti-inflammatory and/ or anti-microbial ingredients or oral antibiotics with little to no improvement. If you have tried the above and are not getting satisfactory relief, then you may wish to try micro-Botox as there are several reports and clinical studies demonstrating its effectiveness.
Although new research now suggests that micro-Botox injections can offer effective and reliable results, it is worth noting that micro-Botox for rosacea is an off-label (i.e. not an officially approved indication) treatment option and that results are temporary.
Botox for rosacea
With no definitive cause, it has been notoriously difficult to treat rosacea in the past, with topical treatments and medications offering little to no improvement for too many patients. However, since 2015, micro-Botox injections have been found to be effective in treating this condition, offering patients effective symptomatic relief for 4-6 months. It is believed that Botox temporarily stops blood vessels dilating, and thus reduces the characteristic red and flushed skin. It may also block immune cells that are involved in the inflammatory response that worsens rosacea.
This non-surgical procedure is safe and offers long-term results for sufferers that had all but given up hope.
Is this procedure painful?
It is by no means a painful treatment. Most of our patients described the sensation being as if your skin is snapped by a rubber band. 90% of our patients do not require any form of anaesthetic agent at all and they describe this procedure as less uncomfortable than getting a vaccine or having blood sample taken from your arm.
There is an option for you to have topical anaesthetics applied prior to the treatment, although there may be an extra charge for this. Please discuss this with our cosmetic doctor during the consultation.
What is micro-Botox injection for rosacea?
Micro-Botox injection for rosacea with an automated injection device is a revolutionary treatment available only at Essence Medical Cosmetic Clinic. Its breakthrough treatment protocol combines hyaluronic acid (HA) skin booster with Botox. This unique treatment protocol aims to reduce symptoms of rosacea, giving you a more radiant appearance for 4-6 months.
HA skin booster attracts moisture, which super-hydrates the skin. Tiny doses of micro-Botox temporarily stop blood vessels dilating, and thus reduces the characteristic red and flushed skin. It may also block immune cells that are involved in the inflammatory response that worsens rosacea.

When will I see results?
You can expect to see results between 5 days to 2 weeks after the treatment.
What will I look like immediately after the procedure?
At the injection sites it is normal to experience mild redness. There may be visible papules (small and localised mosquito-bite liked swelling) for 6-12 hours. Whilst uncommon, there may be localised bruising which should resolve itself within a day or two. Mineral make-up can be applied immediately after the procedure.
What post-treatment advice should I follow?
You may apply mineral make-up immediately after the treatment. However, try to avoid applying any skin care products until the following morning.
Avoid strenuous exercise for 24 hours and if any lumps are noticeable, simply massage the area to flatten them out.
How many treatments do I need?
Whilst visible results can be seen after just one treatment, we recommend that you have two consecutive treatments, 3-4 months apart, followed by maintenance treatments once every 6 months.
One of the great advantages of this treatment is that the effects are long lasting. However, the results are not permanent. Duration depends on many factors such as your skin type, lifestyle, age and severity of your condition.
How long will the effect last?
One of the great advantages of this treatment is that the effects are long lasting. However, the results are not permanent – duration depends on many factors including your skin type, lifestyle, age and the severity of your condition. After the initial two treatments, follow-up sessions are normally recommended around every 6 months.
How much time is needed for this treatment and can I go on with my day following the procedure?
Typically, the treatment only takes 20-30 minutes to complete. Most people feel comfortable going back to their normal activities immediately following their appointment. Mineral make-up may be applied immediately after the treatment. As mentioned above, there may be visible papules (small and localised mosquito-bite like swelling) for 6-12 hours. Whilst uncommon, there may be localised bruising which should resolve itself within a day or two.
What can I expect from my consultation and will I have treatment the same day?
You are required to have a face-to-face consultation prior to having this treatment. In the consultation Dr Bong will examine your face, focussing on the condition of your rosacea. Dr Bong will then offer you a treatment plan and quote you a price. He will also discuss in detail the advantages and limitations of this treatment and the alternatives.
After the consultation – and should you choose to have the treatment – you will be offered another appointment for the procedure.
It is dangerous in the wrong hands
All injections come with risks – swelling, bruising etc. But Accuracy of depth of injection of Botox is vital to avoid wrongful paralysis of underlying muscles. We believe that patients need to understand the safety principles of micro-Botox injection for rosacea. Unlike the use of Botox to soften wrinkles in the forehead, frown area and crow’s feet, micro-Botox injection for rosacea is administered in the skin, not the underlying muscles.
Incorrect placement of the Botox injection can cause paralysis of underlying muscles, resulting in crooked facial expression.
This treatment is not a procedure you want to shop around for a cheaper deal.
Dr Bong has extensive experience in this procedure and his expertise and skills in his field are unparalleled. You will be in the safest of hands.
