Effective treatment with Botox®

We all know the feeling. The trickle down your underarm on a particularly packed train, and that instinctive awareness that yes, you definitely have sweat patches. And while sweating is a totally natural process that helps to keep the body cool, we all know that it can be less than ideal (especially if your deodorant isn’t quite playing ball). However, because sweat glands are innervated by sympathetic nerves, Botox® is highly effective in reducing and abolishing sweat production in treated areas.

  • Live your life to the full and with confidence
  • 95-100% dryness for 4-6 months
  • Virtually pain-free treatment

Botox Injection for Excessive Sweating FAQ

What is Botox®?

Botox® injections are used to treat a variety of medical conditions. Botox® is a neurotoxin made from the microbes that cause botulism (a kind of food poisoning). But do not worry, it is very safe if used appropriately by a medical professional.

Botox® got its start as a cosmetic treatment. It smooths facial wrinkles by temporarily paralysing muscles. Doctors also use Botox® to treat neuromuscular conditions such as migraines, muscle spasms, and hyperhidrosis.

Hyperhidrosis is the medical term for excessive sweating. It refers to any abnormal sweating, such as sweating when it is not hot. People who sweat excessively often soak through their clothing or drip sweat. Regular antiperspirants do not work well for those with this condition.

Botox® injections are an effective treatment option for people with hyperhidrosis. You may be a candidate for Botox® if your sweating fails to improve with prescription antiperspirants. Botox® has been FDA-afor people who sweat excessively from their armpits and is also a recognised treatment by the NHS.

How does Botox® for excessive underarm sweating work?

Botox® works by blocking the nerves responsible for activating your sweat glands. Normally, your nervous system activates your sweat glands when your body temperature rises. This is how your body automatically cools itself. In people with hyperhidrosis, however, the nerves that signal the sweat glands are overactive.

When you receive Botox® injections directly into the area of your body that commonly sweats, your overactive nerves are essentially paralysed. When your nerves cannot signal your sweat glands, you do not sweat. However, Botox® only prevents sweating in the specific area where it is injected.

What happens during the procedure?

Using a very fine needle, Dr Bong will inject a small amount of Botox® into 10 to 15 places about 1 cm apart and spread evenly in each underarm area. Sometimes – although not common – a dye is used to show up the areas where sweating is greatest and where the injections should be placed. Unlike the use of Botox® for lines and wrinkles, where the medication is injected through the skin into the underlying muscles, in the case of excessive sweating, the toxin is injected very superficially into the skin itself. A course of treatment takes about 30 minutes.

Is this procedure painful?

Not at all. The procedure consists of a few small Botox® injections in the underarm area. Dr Bong is well known for performing virtually pain-free Botox® injections, thanks to his unique skills and expertise, as well as the ultra-fine needles we use. These needles are so delicate, treatment is less painful than plucking your eyebrows! Anaesthesia is not necessary and not useful.

What’s it like to get Botox® injections for underarm sweating?

Botox® injections work best when given by an experienced medical professional. Injections don’t take long and can be completed during an office visit. Your doctor will inject the Botox® medication just below the surface of the skin using a fine needle. You will receive several injections that form a grid pattern around your area of concern.

You can return to work and normal life as soon as you are done with your Botox® injections.

How do I prepare for the procedure?

Botox® injections for excessive armpit sweating are a simple and quick procedure. We typically ask that you avoid shaving your armpits for two or three days prior to your appointment. If you take blood thinners, we may ask you to stop for a few days prior to your injections to prevent bruising. Tell us about any medications you are taking and do not stop taking any medications unless our doctor tells you to.

When will treatment take effect?

Your underarm sweating will decrease to 95% within 72 hours and the full effect will be seen within 1 week. Along with the sweating, there is a simultaneous disappearance of odour associated with the decreased sweating. Your doctor will advise you about when to return for further treatment.

How long does the result last?

For maximum results, we recommend the following treatment regime:

  1. Second treatment 4 months after the first treatment
  2. Third treatment 5 months after the second treatment
  3. Forth treatment 6 months after your third treatment

After the above treatment regime, most of our patients maintain the results with 6-monthly repeat treatment. The majority of our patients achieve near 100% dryness when they follow the above treatment regime.

What are the risks and side effects?

Botox is not harmful. There may be some tiny bruises or needle marks, but these fade in a few days. Occasionally there may be small persistent areas of sweating that may need a second treatment session (which may incur additional charge). There is NO risk of muscle weakness, numbness or permanent change in the axillary skin.

Is the use of Botox® for excessive underarm sweating safe?

Yes. This treatment is an extremely safe procedure because Botox® is covered by the Medicines Act. This means that years have been spent researching its effectiveness, side effects and possible complications. Only when the results are favourable that this medication is allowed onto the market. The dosage of Botox® used in this procedure is low, such that it cannot be harmful or toxic.

No negative long-term effects of Botox® have ever been reported.

Do I still need deodorant after Botox injections for underarm sweating?

Unlikely! Dr Bong’s extensive experience and expertise in this treatment allows him to have extremely high success rate. The majority of our patients achieve a minimum of 95% dryness. This means the majority of our patients will have little or no sweating.

Although the anti-perspirant properties of deodorant may not be required, deodorant for odour control might be useful. The armpit contains apocrine sweat glands, which contribute to body odour. Botox® cannot inhibit these specific apocrine sweat glands, so this is where a nice deodorant would do the trick.

How many people have this treatment? Is it popular?

This is one of our most popular treatments, thanks to Dr Bong’s extremely high success rate in achieving 95-100% dryness.

It is certainly gaining more popularity. Patients who have had successful treatments previously, tend to have it before the summer (when they are most prone to hyperhidrosis). Other patients with more severe hyperhidrosis may attend our clinic when they are most symptomatic, irrespective of summer vs. winter. These patients can become distressed by the psychosocial sequelae of hyperhidrosis when other treatments have not helped. Other patients may only have mild hyperhidrosis, but have an important occasion coming up and want to minimise the chance of sweat stains.

How will I feel after the treatment?

Self-assured and confident without the embarrassment often experienced in social situations.

How many units of Botox are used in this procedure?

This is no set number of units or dosage used in this treatment, with a great variation based on the severity of your condition. Everyone is different and that is why you are required to have a face-to-face consultation prior to having this treatment. In the consultation Dr Bong will ask you a few important questions to establish the severity of your condition.

Dr Bong will then offer you a treatment plan and quote you a price. He will also discuss in detail the advantages and limitations of this treatment and the alternatives.

How exactly Botox® can beat sweating?

Excessive sweating is a result of over-stimulation of sweat glands. From a physiological perspective, sweat production requires acetylcholine (a neurotransmitter) to activate the eccrine sweat glands. Botox® temporarily inhibits the release of acetylcholine, preventing the hyperstimulation of these sweat glands. Therefore, by blocking or interrupting this chemical pathway, Botox® minimises (or potentially stops) sweating in the area where it has been injected.

Is this different to beating wrinkles with Botox® and how?

Wrinkles are formed in part by repetitive contraction of underlying facial musculature, particularly where the skin is thin. Like sweat production, muscle movement also requires the release of the neurotransmitter acetylcholine. Botox® also works by inhibiting the release of acetylcholine, but it acts specifically at the neuromuscular junction. Interestingly, with superficial injections to manage wrinkles on the forehead for example, Botox® may also reduce sweating whilst weakening the muscle (because it can act on the sweat glands and muscle in the same area), thereby improving the appearance of the skin.

I was treated by another practitioner, but I don’t see much results. Is there a reason for this?

Botox® for excessive underarm sweating injection is customised for every patient. There are a few reasons as to why the injections might not have created an improvement.

• There are many brands of Botulinum Toxin Type-A available. Be weary and avoid any other versions, which may be counterfeit, water-down versions, or “Chinese Botox” which can yield unreliable and potentially dangerous results.

• Poor technique – It is crucial that a skilled and experienced doctor carries out this procedure for you.

• Too few units – Each patient has a unique dosage, and treatments should be customised for his or her anatomy and physiology.

• Follow-up treatments – Botox® injection for underarm sweating requires a series of treatments, so that each treatment can build of the last and have the most impact.

Will I have the treatment in the same visit as my consultation?

Unfortunately not.

After the consultation – and providing you decide to have the treatment – you will be offered another appointment for the treatment.

There are many ‘cheap Botox deals’ out there. Should I consider them?

There are many ‘cheap Botox deals’ out there. Should I consider them?

The continuing rise in the demand for non-surgical cosmetic procedures has led to an increase in the number of people administering Botox® and fillers and other types of treatments at incredibly low prices. Whilst this might sound like good news for you, unfortunately, it is far from it.

Non-surgical cosmetic procedures are costly for very good reasons. The expense involved in using quality products, providing excellent service and meeting the necessary safety requirements is significant, so in order to meet these costs, quality medical professional have to set their prices accordingly.

In order to offer ‘cheap Botox’ shoddy practitioners are unlikely to invest in any of the above, as when offering cheap treatments, the cost of provision has to be minimal in order to make a profit.
