Treating Hyperhidrosis with Botulinum Toxin Injections
Botulinum toxin, more commonly known as Botox, is a neurotoxin derived from the bacterium Clostridium botulinum. While it’s best known for its cosmetic uses in reducing wrinkles and facial lines, botulinum toxin has also been approved for treating various medical conditions, including hyperhidrosis.
When injected into the skin, botulinum toxin blocks the release of acetylcholine, a neurotransmitter that stimulates sweat glands. By preventing this release, the sweat glands become temporarily inactive, significantly reducing sweating.
Several studies have shown that botulinum toxin injections are highly effective in treating armpit hyperhidrosis, with up to 90% success rates. - Consultation: First, you’ll meet Dr Bong who is experienced in administering botulinum toxin injections for hyperhidrosis. He will evaluate the severity of your condition, discuss your medical history, and determine if you’re a suitable candidate for the treatment.
- Preparing for the treatment: Before the procedure, you may be asked you to shave your armpits and avoid using antiperspirants or deodorants. You should also inform Dr Bong of any medications or supplements you’re currently taking.
- The injection process: During the procedure, a small amount of botulinum toxin will be injected into several points in each armpit, targeting the areas with the highest concentration of sweat glands. The process is relatively quick and may cause mild discomfort, but most patients tolerate it well.
- Post-treatment care and expectations: After the injections, you should avoid strenuous activity and excessive heat exposure for a few days. You may notice a reduction in sweating within a week, but it can take up to two weeks for the full effects to become apparent. The results usually last between four and twelve months, after which you may need to repeat the treatment.
As with any medical procedure, there are potential risks associated with botulinum toxin injections for hyperhidrosis. Some of the possible side effects include:
- Pain or bruising at the injection site
- Muscle weakness or stiffness in the treated area
- Headaches
- Flu-like symptoms

Please note for all patients, a £50 fee will be charged if you cancel or reschedule ANY appointment (including appointments which do not require an upfront deposit, such as a ‘check-up’ or review appointment) less than 48 hours before the appointment time. Patients who have pre-purchased a course of treatment will forfeit one of the treatments instead of paying this fee.
Late arrival to your appointment may result in reduced treatment time or the forfeiting of the appointment. We will endeavour to ensure that your appointment runs on time. However, for reasons beyond our control, we may need to cancel or postpone your appointment at short notice. In this unlikely event, we will try to contact you in advance. We do not offer compensation if we cancel or postpone your appointment.

To help our patients minimise the chance of losing their deposit or pre-paid treatments, we issue text reminders a minimum of 48 hours ahead of appointments. Patients should be aware that there may be reasons beyond our control, meaning that the text message does not reach them. Patients should diarise themselves when making follow-up appointments and not rely solely on the text message from the clinic as a reminder.
