Smooth your dimpled, bumpy, uneven, orange-peel chin with Botox.
Botox injections generally treat frown lines, crow’s feet and horizontal forehead lines. However, many do not appreciate that Botox can be very effective on the lower part of the face, particularly on the chin.
As we age, bumpy or lumpy skin on the chin can appear, and this is commonly called the ‘orange peel’ or, as the French put it, the ‘peau d’orange’ effect. This rippled, or dimpling effect, is caused by excessive flexing of the chin muscles called the mentalis muscle. The precise injection of Botox in this area relaxes the mentalis muscle, giving the chin a smoother contour.
Treatment process and side effects
The treatment is practically painless thanks to the ultrafine needle we use and our doctor’s many years of experience in the field. The effect lasts between 4-6 months, although the exact duration is influenced by many factors, such as individual skin type and the severity of the problem. Accurate injection of Botox is critical to minimise the risk of side effects. The procedure may seem straightforward, but it requires an acute appreciation of the anatomy in this area to ensure that neighbouring muscles are not inadvertently affected. Although side effects are almost negligible, people of specific categories, such as pregnant or nursing women and anyone with some existing neurological conditions, are advised to avoid Botox. Crucially, if you play any musical instrument requiring the use of the chin and mouth (such as a bagpipe or saxophone), you should make your doctor aware of it before you undergo this treatment.
Combined approach
For moderate-severe chin dimpling or wrinkling cases, we advise our patients to combine this treatment with dermal fillers to achieve the desired aesthetic outcome. Our cosmetic doctor will discuss these options with you and assess your suitability for this procedure.
