Our medium-depth chemical skin peel is unique and exclusive to Essence Medical. This peel is not available in the high street and should not be confused with other stand-alone TCA peels, which are widely available in clinics or medispas.

This peel is considered medium-depth to deep peel, meaning it can pass beyond the epidermis (the outermost layer of skin) and even potentially to the top of the papillary dermis (part of the dermis; the next layer of skin after the epidermis). The depth of the peel is determined by the strength of the acid used and the number of coats the chemical agent is applied.

This treatment can only be carried out in a controlled clinic environment by a medically qualified professional.

A number of factors dictate the depth of the peel:

  1. Type of chemical agent
  2. Concentration
  3. Number of applications (coats)
  4. Skin type
  5. Time of exposure

Essentially, the depth of the peel is cumulative dose-dependent; a monolayer of the application allows for a more superficial level of anticipated exfoliation, with subsequent multiple layers or “passes/coats” resulting in additive, more profound peeling. However, multiple applications or layers of a superficial peel, for example, are not the same as a monolayer or single application of a medium-depth chemical peel.

Superficial or “light” peels remove only the top layer, mostly the layer of dead skin called the stratum corneum. Progressing from medium to deep peels, the layer of skin removed is greater with each increase in strength of the peel solution, the number of ‘passes’ and duration of exposure to the chemical agent.

As you can see above, the doctor’s skills and experience are critical.

The procedure involves a chemical solution that is applied to the skin. This causes the top layers of cells to dry up and peel off over several days to one week. When the old, dead skin is peeled off, it exposes a new layer of undamaged skin. This newly regenerated skin underneath is usually smoother, less wrinkled and more even in tone and colour than the old skin.

Typically the skin is first thoroughly cleansed. Then your doctor will carefully apply the medium-grade chemical solution. You may feel slight stinging as the peel solution is applied, but the feeling will quickly pass. Generally, pain medication is not required. Instead, a neutralising anti-inflammatory cream will be applied when the desired depth is achieved. This will neutralise the burning sensation. Immediate flushing and areas of frosted skin result, but this returns to its standard colour in 15-30 minutes. The medium-grade chemical solution is washed off the following morning with gentle soap and water. Makeup can be worn the next day, and one can resume normal activities immediately. A complete face treatment usually takes no more than 15 minutes.

Zero pain.

This is what is unique and special about our medium-depth skin peel. Ordinary stand-alone TCA peels cause a sharp sting during the procedure. Our one-of-its-kind peel solution is made of patented Painless Technology®, which causes zero pain. There is nothing like it.

The skin has a mild sensation of heat in the first 2 hours after treatment.

Tightening the skin in the immediate 2-3 days; superficial layers of the skin may turn dark and become stiff and leathery.

Skin shedding/flaking from day 3 – for 3 or 4 days

Stay out of the sun for a minimum of two weeks.

Wear a high Sun Protection Factor of at least 30SPF for a minimum of 2 weeks.

One week after your treatment, you should notice that your skin looks younger, smoother and tighter. These results will continue to improve for the next two weeks, after which your skin should be completely healed again.

You should notice an improvement in the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles, sun spots, depth of acne scars and pore size. You will also see that the texture and tone of your skin are improved.

Though just one treatment yields dramatic results, a series of 2-4 treatments will give your skin the best results possible.

Medium-depth peel is a medical-grade product and is safe if administered by a trained medical professional. Dr Bong is one of Europe’s most respected cosmetic doctors and has over ten years of experience in advanced medical-grade skin peels. You will be in the safest of hands.

As with any procedure, there are potential side effects, such as post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation (PIH), prolonged redness, cold sore virus infection, post-procedure contact irritant dermatitis, and even infection and scarring. But if used by a trained medical professional, these risks are minimal. Remember, this is a medical procedure, not a beauty salon procedure.

The face, neck, chest and back of hands.

When considering peels of non-facial areas, it’s essential to realise that these areas do not heal as well as the face, and the desired results are not as predictable.

No, medium-depth peels are beneficial for all types of skin. Peeling the skin regularly encourages new cell turnover and, in the long-term, brings about a process known as ‘neocollagenesis’ and collagen remodelling. In short, this means your skin will be tighter, smoother, free of pigmentation and have a healthy glow. In addition, an appropriate at-home skincare regime can be used to maintain the results.

Medium-depth peels are beneficial for mild boxcar acne scarring or mild rolling scars but not adequate for ice pick scars. This peel will lead to a moderate acne scar, but more invasive procedures such as laser resurfacing or deep Phenol Peel are required for substantial improvement.

In our experience, the most effective approach is a combination of medium-depth peels and advanced automated micro-needling for substantial results.

It is important to remember that acne scarring is tough to treat and virtually impossible to remove altogether; it can only be improved.

This depends on the depth of the peel and the extent of your continuing sun exposure. But, again, Dr Bong should be able to give you an estimate.

Environmental factors such as UV damage, dehydration and pollutants constantly strain your skin. Therefore, performing a procedure like this is like going to the gym only once. Medium-depth peels are slightly heavier and should be performed (depending on the strength) a couple of times a year for optimal benefits.

Dr Bong will give you specific instructions, but some general guidelines are as follows.

Wash nightly with a gentle cleanser like Dr Bong’s Age-Smart Silk Cleanser and gently remove any makeup. Next, apply a thick, hydrating moisturiser.

Ask Dr Bong when makeup can be applied. You will need to increase your use of a day and night moisturiser after the peel as your skin will be temporarily drier. You must avoid direct and intense sun exposure for six weeks.

For the full face the cost for a medium peel is £400.00
